To practice massage therapy in Ontario, you must obtain a Certificate of Registration from the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario. I think they require a 3 year program of training.

Hello, I am a MT student in Ontario in my 2nd term. It’s a challenging and expensive course, but I love it!

College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (the governing body - CMTO) says an RMT in Ontario must have at least 2200 hours of study. This typically means 18-24 months, depending on if they do a fast track or regular program.

Pre-requisites: not many. Graduate high-school, english language standards, and most schools have a pre-admissions course to weed out anyone who isn’t serious or up to snuff. Science background is not usually necessary, but would help the student get through! Having a background in personal training *might* allow for him to have advanced-standing in some schools, but not necessarily. MT students look at anatomy and phys in a different way from doctors, even, so it’s a little tricky.

We learn anatomy, phys, neuro, treatments and techniques, history, therapeutic relations, business, orthopedic assessment, pathology…

Then to work in Ontario, you need to pass the CMTO exams after graduating school.

CMTO site offers these schools for consideration. Mine is on this list. I would recommend that your nephew make a list of things he wants out of a school and things he doesn’t like about a school, and then do a lot of research, visit each school, talk to some students if possible before deciding on one.

Ontario is a great place to learn massage therapy because most other places in the world have lower standards (than 2200 hours), so it should be easy to get registered and work elsewhere if he wanted to travel.

    I hope this helps!
